Assistant Superintendent of Student Achievement
Welcome
I have been with Durango School District 9-R since 2001. Four of those years as an administrator at the middle school level, two years at the elementary level and the past three years in central administration. Before moving to Durango, I was a regular education teacher, special education teacher, and played baseball for the Oakland A’s.
As Assistant Superintendent of Student Achievement, I have a wide range of responsibilities that support the development of the instructional areas that are so important to our students. I supervise five departments including Student Achievement, Student Support Services and Special Education, Educational Technology, Curriculum and Assessment and Professional Development. I am fortunate to work with talented executive directors of these departments and together we ensure that staff members have current curricula and resources, participate in meaningful professional development opportunities, are supported in their work with students who have special needs, and are able to avail themselves of technology. In addition, we support students by providing curricula and resources that are relevant, offering specialized programs, and continually updating the applications and software that are available.
Our departments also facilitate the work being done to implement our district's strategic plan. Strategies over which we have the most responsibility are those that address community partnerships; 21st Century curriculum & assessments; meaningful, relevant, & authentic education; and character attributes. Our educational technology department plays a vital role in the communication strategy, as well.
As is true in other governmental agencies, there are a variety of state and federal reports that must be completed on a regular basis. An important task that we perform each spring is the completion of a consolidated grant. This grant brings in funding so we are better able to meet the needs of students in poverty, students who do not speak English as a native language, and students who are incarcerated. A second set of grant dollars support teachers' professional growth and keeping our schools safe and drug free.
I have enjoyed the past nine years in Durango and look forward to helping bring our school district to its highest level of performance. I hope to see many of you while I am out in schools supporting principals, staff, parents and students. My door is always open if you would like to contact me.
